How Am I Supposed to "Find Myself"?

My four years as a college student included numerous trials and tribulations that have culminated into the most valuable piece of learning I have experienced.  The following piece is an article I wrote for the school newspaper about the end of my senior year.

A few weekends back, a person kindly informed me that I was not good enough for them. Sorry, that’s not right. The direct quote was, “I am bored with you.”
In that moment, I felt my once-present confidence shatter as a bruised ego began to take over. I internalized those words and began to think that if one person thought of me in this way, then others must think so, too. If a person that I regarded so highly thought so little of me, what did that say about me?
I suppose this came at a convenient time, considering the end of the semester is near, and as a soon-to-be college graduate, it was presumably time I started the “finding yourself” process. Of course, it is nowhere near complete, and probably never will be, but the start of the journey has been enlightening for me in ways that I felt compelled to share.
The first step was to examine why I was letting a single person affect how I viewed myself, because as someone who generally disregards others’ ideas about me, I was not used to having my self-perception become so skewed. The reason? Rejection. The vulnerability of leaving school and not yet knowing what I want to do has affected me more than I anticipated. It unknowingly rocked my sense of confidence and created an open space that let rejection affect me. So when this person came at me with words that had already been somewhat present in another area of my life, the two paths merged, and I let someone else’s words negatively impact my view of myself.
Once I realized that what bothered me was the notion of rejection rather than this particular person, I wanted to find a way to combat it. I’m not usually a competitive person, but having my perspective shaken up motivated me—not to prove to him why I was good enough, but to prove to myself why rejection, in any form, couldn’t bring me down. When I realized that I was doing it for myself and not for another person, I found a piece of myself coming back. My integrity. Standing true to what I believe in for my own sake. I’ve always valued integrity because I feel it represents strength, honesty, confidence, and strong morals. What I didn’t know until recently is that integrity is not simply a concept I value. Rather, it is a part of who I am and represents my character in a way that I am proud of.
And just like that, I had found a missing puzzle piece.
But I was stuck: How was I to proceed in the journey of finding myself? It sounds like a process that should come without trying—after all, it seems somewhat ridiculous to consciously proceed on the path of finding yourself. If I tried too hard, my decisions would certainly have been influenced by my wanting to render a particular answer. So I abandoned the project and carried on with my new-found puzzle piece clutched tightly to my chest.
And as the following weeks ensued, a surprising amount of success followed me. Though they were only small tokens of success, the continual positivity influenced me to keep working towards my goals of bettering myself. As my peers began to complain about “senioritis,” I found a new sense of motivation in terms of my academics. The typical nauseous feeling I got when I thought about post-grad employment was suddenly disappearing, and the dread of running into the ever-so-lovely person who dumped me at Coachella was no longer present.
Seriously, what was happening?
For the life of me, I could not uncover the mystery of why every part of my daily life was changing, albeit in a good way. I was trying to formulate some complex reason for my newfound demeanor until the simplicity of it practically hit me in the face: I was being myself.
A shocking concept, I know. Yet in this college environment where hypocrisy and competition are ever-present among us, it is all too easy to get entangled in the web of our peers and seemingly perfect ideals. But those few weeks of utter disregard allowed me to find a part of myself that is the simplest yet most difficult to reveal: being me. I am still not sure of what this means in exact definition, yet in its purest form, I take it to mean that I am regaining a sense of confidence too strong to let anyone influence how I see myself. I do not want to confuse confidence with cockiness; what I mean by confidence is that I believe with certainty in my values and my ability to make a positive life for myself. There is no longer reason for me to rely on anyone else but myself.
I think that being myself has allowed me to discover another piece of the ‘finding yourself’ puzzle. In becoming myself, I can unapologetically do the things that make me happy. And in life’s simplest form, isn’t that all I need?
I don’t particularly want to thank the person who told me he was bored of me, but in a way, I suppose I can partially credit it to him, because without that conversation, my ‘finding yourself’ process would have started later, post-graduation, and that could have been even more disastrous—because, real world, am I right?
I am nowhere near finding the end, but I am looking forward to living it through and finding a sense of completeness.

I hope anyone reading this can relate to it in some way or another.
Sincerely,
Alexandra S.

Confessions- My First Time Riding A Bike

Okay, so it's not actually about the first time I ever rode a bike.

More along the lines of, the first time I rode my bike in the biking capital of the world.

I thought I would take you all along the little journey inside my head while I attempted to ride through the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark.

1. Yes! Today I get to be a real Dane and ride this bike!
2. Wow, this bike looks semi-intimidating..
3. It's okay Alex, you totally got this.
4. I'm on the bike, let's go!
5. Crap, I just turned left instead of right.  It's okay though, just loop around.
6. Okay, now we are looking good.  I'm off!
7. Wait, where do I have to go again?
8. This riding thing is totally easy, I got this in the bag.
9. I can even multi-task and look at the pretty birds flying around!
10. Oh, there is the sign that says where I need to go!
11. Wait, it's in Danish.
12. Oh my god, what do I do?
13. Umm, don't panic and go off of instinct!
14. So, braking in the middle of the pathway may not be the best instinct..
15. I'm gonna go left, I'm pretty sure thats correct.
16. That's definitely correct.
17. Wait is it? I don't actually know.
18. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming swimming swimming swimming
19. Shoot, someone is trying to pass me
20. PLEASE DON'T HIT ME
21. Phew! He made it by and I didn't crash!
22. Hey look! I'm in the city.
23. Oh my god. So many cars, so many buses, so many bikers.
24. Stay calm Alex, just get in the heard of bikers but stay in the back so you don't die.
25. This isn't so bad!
26. BUS PULLING INTO BIKE LANE. BUS PULLING INTO BIKE LANE.
27. This is it, I'm saying my goodbyes now.
28. Wait, did I just survive that?
29. I really am a rockstar
30. Mental self high-five
31. Okay wait, where am I going again?
32. Oh yeah, the queen's palace.
33. I wonder how I am doing on time?
34. Literally thank you Copenhagen for being a flat city.
35. Time to turn left in the city, you got this.
36. What's the hand signal for that again?
37. I'm just going to copy that person in front of me.
38. No wait, she's putting up her right hand so never mind.
39. She just turned left!
40. WHY IS THE RULE TO PUT UP YOUR RIGHT HAND WHEN YOU WANT TO TURN LEFT?
41. I don't understand biking.
42. Now that I missed my left turn, I should try again probably.
43. My right hand is raised, soo I'm just gonna go ahead and turn left now.
44. Wait why is that car headed straight at me?
45. I definitely just went not at my turn.
46. Stop laughing to yourself Alex, you look like an idiot.
47. I definitely think I'm on the right path now
48. Yah you got this!
49. This old woman in front of me needs to hurry up because I'm too scared to pass her.
50. I'm going to pass her
51. I'm doing it...this is is giving me an adrenaline rush.
51. Don't forget to check before moving into a different part of the lane..
52. Okay, bikers coming; I'll wait until they pass by.
53. Okay hurry up now
54. Oh my god why are there SO many of you
55. Finally a break! My time to shine
56. Makin' moves passing old ladies, Ohhhh yeahhhh
57. DID IT!
58. I see cobblestone, this can't be good.
59. This is the worst thing ever invented.
60. My head is bouncing up and down and my feet are slipping from the pedals.
61. Dear Europe, please invent new forms of road that are not cobblestone.
62. Why is there even cobblestone for a bike path?
63. Wait, what is this dude yelling at me for?
64. OHH THIS ISN'T A BIKE PATH ANYMORE
65. How the hell did I manage to ride onto cobblestone?
66. Am I ever going to get to this palace?
67. I need a mental health break
68. Wait, what is this building in front of me it's so pretty!
69. It's the palace.
70. I MADE IT!!!
71. This biking thing isn't so bad!
72. Now, I just need to get off the cool way the Danes do it.
73. Sliding my leg over and carefully coasting, got it.
74. Anndd my boot is stuck.
75. Oh god, going down.
76. Brush it off, no one saw that.  Right?
77. Actually, I don't care if anyone saw.
78. That cute boy just saw..
79. Greeeaaattttttttt
80. Just gonna walk my bike now and call it day.

Making Spring Happen

Though it is technically still winter, daylight savings has occurred which essentially translates to the welcoming of spring in my mind.  While spending a semester in Denmark has been incredible, the lack of sunlight was a tough adjustment for me. Thus, when the sun started shining and the temperature raised to a high of 47 degrees, I ran around like a crazy person welcoming the first signs of spring.

I like the welcoming of spring because it seems to have the most distinct seasonal transition.  To get in the mindset of spring, I enjoy changing up my routine a little bit.  Take a look and see what gets me ready for the spring time.

1.  Adding color and fresh flowers
At the first sign of spring, my host mom and I went on project 'make spring happen' in the house.  We set fresh flowers at the table and swapped out the more ordinary table runner for one with lots of color and flower prints on it.  These two simple steps added so much life to the room and compliment the pictures hanging on the wall.  The dining room has a lot more light and color that is perfect for spring.

2.  Changing up my look
Of course, spring requires a different look than winter because of temperature, but it is also fun to embrace the essence of spring by adding some color, patterns, and textures.  For me in Copenhagen, it is still too cold to completely ditch the winter coat however, I have been trying to swap out my all black regime to adding a little bit more white and color.  I think adding new textures adds a lot as well.  I have started to incorporate some lace which gives a more spring vibe in my opinion.

 Lips and Nails
As I mentioned above, it is still very cold in Denmark so I can't transition to bright orange nails just yet, but I can add some more fun colors.  Shout out to my mother for sending me nail polish ( I was not feeling the bare nails look).  Also, I like to add some color to my makeup!  I typically stay pretty neutral with makeup, but I picked up this Revlon Lip Color in Darling Chérie which adds a subtle lavender color to my lips that I surprisingly really enjoy.  Who knew purple lips could be a thing?! I swear it's not weird...

3.  FOOD
My favorite part.  Obviously.  Spring is all about colors right? So incorporate that into your diet!  Switch out the heavy winter staples like meats and stews for seasonal fruits!  My host mom and I went to the farmers market and picked up a ton of new fruit and I want to sing out loud because I am so happy about it (cue Pharrell and his hat).  This time of year I like to start making more salads and less sandwiches for lunch just because that seems to fit the mood a little bit better.  I always like to keep in mind what my mom taught from the beginning: the more colors on your plate, the better!

I mean seriously, this look like heaven.

4.  Take advantage of the outside
This can take so many different forms.  If I was back at college in California it would probably include going for hikes, laying out at the beach, or playing a pick up game of ultimate.  Here in Copenhagen, it means it is time for me complete my transition into Danish culture and ride my bike.  Since cycling is the most used form of transportation here, I can no longer use the cold weather as my excuse to take the train.  Today I hopped on my bike and rode around for about three hours simply exploring and getting used the roads.  I went into the city and learned how NOT to die, and I explored little neighborhoods too.  Being outside is amazing in general, but throw in some exercise, friends, Vitamin D, and of course picnics and it makes for the perfect spring life.

This is my way of making spring happen faster.  I feel that if I wish it come sooner, it should just happen.  Leave a comment letting me know your favorite things about spring!

Sincerely,
Alexandra S.

Health- My Fitness Routine

Is anyone else trying to redeem themselves after this past holiday season?  I certainly am.  Over this break, I was not home long enough to activate my gym account so I came up with this routine to do at home to get in a good dose of daily exercise.  Enjoy!

Breakfast:  Since I typically do my workouts in the morning, it is important to fuel the body pre-workout to maximize efforts.  I like to start the morning off with good old fashioned oatmeal.  I use regular, unsweetened oatmeal.  To cook it, I mix 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup almond milk in a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Then, I add 1/2 cup oats and cook until it is done!  I like to add cinnamon, berries, flax seeds, and dash of organic agave to add some antioxidants and little bit of sweetness.  It is so perfect in the morning and gives the perfect amount of fuel!

Outfit:  Working out in the right gear can vastly improve a workout since comfort is key.  While I do venture off to other fitness brands, Nike is my favorite since I am continually inspired by their athletes and motivational efforts.  Watch these videos to get inspired and motivated!

The Workout:  For the actual workout, I like to start off by doing a 30 minute run around my neighborhood.  I don't push myself too hard, but it is important to get the heart rate up and keep it there in order to continually improve your levels of fitness.  Since I live on a hill, I end my runs by doing hill sprints (4-6 X 60 meters) to work my 'fast-twitch' muscles and get a fully body cardio workout.  When I get back to the house, I do a medley of abs, arms, and legs.

My favorite ab workout is 8-minute abs which is simply 8 ab exercises held at a minute each.  I try to vary the exercises to work different parts of my core.  Exercises like plank, V-ups, crunches, side abs, and various lower-abs will give the best overall core workout.

Moving on to arms, I typically do a few sets of pushups as well as classic free-weight exercises like bicep curls, arm raises for the shoulders, and the tricep dip behind my head.  Using free weights is an excellent way to tone since it forces the entire body to be engaged giving benefits to not just the targeted areas.  I do free weights in 3 sets with reps of 10-12.  If I'm feeling super strong during pushups, I'll use the 'perfect pushup' which makes everything much harder (not that it ever ends well).

Finally, I end with various leg exercises (apologies for lack of pictures) such as lunges, squats, butt raises, calf raises, and wall sits.  I switch them up everyday depending on what I did the previous day. Again, I do these in 3 sets of 10 and if I want a challenge, I will add a medicine ball to all of the exercises.

So that's it!  I am no personal trainer, but I enjoy exercising and this is a fairly standard workout routine that is perfect to do without a gym.  Go ahead, give it a try.

Sincerely,
Alexandra S.

Ringing in the New Year

I'm not a huge fan of the sappy and cliche new year's posts, but I am a big fan of starting a new year with a fresh and positive mindset.  For me, my room is my favorite place since it is where I do everything- sleep, think, hangout, get ready, etc.  To ring in the new year with a fresh start, I thought it would only be appropriate to do a room project.  The mission:  Organize 'till the death.  Closet, drawers, de-clutter, you name it.  Once I organized, I actually found my room to look a bit barren so I decided to add a few little decorations here and there to add some liveliness.

Cleaning out rooms and drawers is a simple way to not only organize personal items, but mentally organize as well.  While some people prefer the "organized chaos",  I find it extremely helpful to have everything in a place so that I can pick it up in the exact same place I left it.  When I stay clean and organized in my room, I stay more organized with other tasks.

That being said, two small New Year's resolutions for me will be trying to make my bed every morning and putting everything away once I am finished with it.

How are you starting off the new year?

A Holiday Getaway

Merry Christmas everyone!  This holiday season, my family decided to switch things up and take a winter vacation to Playa Del Carmen in Mexico.  Soaking up the sun and exploring the local markets and indigenous history has made for an incredible holiday thus far.  Though the trip is not over, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite moments from the past few days.

Ancient Mayan ruins from 900 AD

These are just a few pics that have been taken over the past couple of days.  The rest of the week holds many more adventures that I cannot wait to share!

Happy Holidays

Health- Working Out For YOU

I went to a workout class a few days ago while I was back at home for Thanksgiving and during the class, the instructor was chanting to the beat of the song to "really work up a sweat so that you can eat the thanksgiving pie later".  In the moment that seemed like a valid statement to make since Thanksgiving is quite obviously notorious for over-indulgence.  However, after the class I started to resent what the instructor was saying.  Working out to simply look a certain way, or to be able to justify certain foods should not be the primary focus of exercising.  I am not denying that it plays a role, but it should not be the sole purpose for working out.  I've come up with a few reasons why you should work out for YOU and also some reasons to simply work out in general.  Enjoy!

1.  Endorphins:  Endorphins are peptides that function as a neurotransmitter and are stimulated during hyperactivity.  Need a translation?  Endorphins are what give you that mysterious "runners high" and general lift in mental health and are stimulated during exercise.  If you are having a bad day, it can be so tempting to lay in bed and watch chick flicks all day and you can do that, but exercise first!  You might be surprised at how much your spirits will be lifted after even a simple workout.  Exercise in any form is one of the best ways to cure those lethargic, mopey, and tired feelings that every college student experiences.

2.  Self Sufficiency and Empowerment:  It is incredibly easy to slip into the pattern of letting others determine how happy you are going to be.  My advice is to not let that happen.  The purpose of exercising should be about making yourself happy and feeling good.  Whatever intentions motivate that statement are personal, but do not let other people decide if you need to exercise or not.  That is 100% up to you and I promise, you will feel better about exercising when it was your idea and no one else's. When you do it for you, and not for your mother, the new dress, or society, you will feel empowered.  It feels good to be strong- physically and mentally because it feels like you can conquer anything.

3*.  Mother Nature: Being a collegiate athlete, I've learned that a gym is a luxury and privilege.  If you do not have access to a gym, that is not a reason to skip the exercise!  Mother nature is the world's greatest gym if you ask me since you can run, hike, bike, ski, play games, etc!  Those girls who stand on the elliptical for hours at a time are doing nothing but burning empty calories.  They aren't even the calories you should burn!  Being active by running around and working different muscle groups simultaneously will help you burn fat as well as sculpt your entire body.  Pretty cool right?  I think so.

4.  Fit is a Lifestyle:  Being fit is about exercising to be mentally and physically strong, eating clean, and treating your body right.  If you want to be fit and healthy, don't attend the exercise classes five days a week to burn the calories on the breakfast you ate earlier.   It doesn't count to exercise for two hours just so you can drink at a party later.  Not drinking, or watching your intake in addition to working out is living a clean lifestyle that makes up being fit.  Your body is a temple, treat it carefully.

Those are some of my reasons for working out.  It makes me feel good and that helps me in other aspects of my life as well.  Working out is not that hard, dedicate an hour a day and that's it!

a gym is not necessary *

Inspire- Morning Routine

I used to not be a morning person at all simply because mornings can often feel rushed and stressful for me and I hate starting my day off with those feelings rushing into my system.

However, I find that when I do mornings the right way, I am most productive and happy in the quiet hours before the hustle and bustle begins.  Let me assure you, I am not waking up before the sun rises but I am waking up with adequate time for me to feel fully awake and feel at peace before school starts.  Here is my morning routine and why I love it:

1.  Waking up:  I like to wake up at least an hour and half or more before my class begins.  It works nicely for me since my first classes aren't until 9:30 or 11:00.  When my alarm wakes me up, I usually stay in bed for an extra ten to fifteen minutes just getting accustomed to not being asleep.  One thing I really love when I wake up is my alarm sound.  I use my iPhone as an alarm clock and I have it set so that I can choose a song to wake up to rather than the blaring beeping sound.  I pick a song that it is upbeat yet soft so that I do in fact wake up, but am not scared by the sound.

2.  Getting Ready:  After I have made it out of bed I immediately go to the bathroom to wash my face, brush my teeth, etc.  This helps me feel more awake.  As I sit down to put on my makeup, I almost always light a candle (usually Vanilla) and put on a gentle  Ed Sheeran-esque playlist to create a soft and cozy environment rather than a harsh and rushed one.  I always take my time getting dressed and I also like to put on clothes that will make me feel more productive (so not sweats or Uggs).

3.  Breakfast: For breakfast I usually head to the coffee shop on campus and get some coffee or tea and a light breakfast.  During this time I find that I am most productive in either finishing up some homework or planning my day.  I think I am most productive simply because I am not trying to get it all done.  I leisurely do my work and when I do this I find I am most efficient.  Kinda backwards but it works!

I think for me, the trick is to take my time as well as be centered and calm throughout the morning.  If I save an important assignment for the morning of, it will lead me to a day of nervous energy and stress.  If I set aside that chunk of time in the morning to have my personal time and also get some work done, it makes an immense difference in how my days go.

Let me know what you do in the morning or what kind of playlists you like to listen to for the morning!

Autumn Fashion- Menswear for Women

Happy November!  Quick apologies for my hiatus, school has got me busy every second of the day, but I am back now :).

I personally love shopping in the Men's section of clothing stores; I think it offers a ton of great basic pieces that girls can wear in so many different ways.  It is especially easy to wear men's clothing during the fall since they do tend to fit looser which is nice for fall time and layering.  I came up with three different looks with a few of the pieces I have from the men's department.  Let me know what you think!

Look 1:  Girly with  military edge

I took this camo T-shirt that I got on clearance from Urban Outfitters and put it over a simple cotton black dress.  To give the tee a bit more shape on my body I tied a simple knot above my waist and this also helped show off the dress a bit more.  I wanted to be bold so I took a textured circle scarf that I got from a second hand store and added this to my look.  I really like how this added a lot more femininity to the outfit as well as made it more autumn appropriate.  To complete the look, I paired it all with my black Steve Madden boots to complete the edgy look.  I thought about wearing knee high boots but I felt that the military style boots kept the theme of the camo without overdoing it.  This look is casual yet put together so it is perfect to wear anywhere!  It is definitely one of go-to's for the rest of autumn.

Look 2:  Comfy, Casual, Classic

This outfit is basically my go to for class everyday since it is very simple, yet also put together.  The Hane's T-shirt is from the Men's section and was only $9.00 for a pack of 3 shirts.  What a steal!  To look more presentable than someone just wearing an oversized men's shirt, I paired it with some dark wash American Eagle skinny ankle jeans that I got on clearance for $30 dollars.  I rolled up the bottoms, added some leopard print flats, and a long gold chain necklace to keep this look classic and chic.  If it gets colder, add any jacket that adds some shape to your figure and you are good to go!  I love this look for everyday running around and staying comfortable in a cute way.

Look 3:  Oversized Sweaters

This is another go-to look for me.  I actually saw my brother wearing this long sleeve shirt, and I decided I needed it so I went and got one for myself.  This a simple long sleeve thermal in a dark maroon/ purple color that goes with EVERYTHING.  It is easily one of the most comfortable items in my closet which is good since I wear it so frequently.  Since it is thermal, it keeps me warm and cozy and since it is oversized it works well with leggings and boots.  I got mine in a size up just to really emphasize the "baggy sweater" trend.  This the easiest look out of the three to put together since it is just boots, sweater, and leggings.  Perfect right?!  If it is colder, you can add a chunky scarf or a military style jacket to give it some edge.

My advice is to not automatically skip over the men's section!  As I mentioned previously, it offers a lot of really great staple pieces that can be dressed up or down for an effortless look everyday.

Hope you like it!  Let me know if any of you shop in the men's section also.

Blogger Diary- Sunday Thoughts

To be honest, I am not sure where I want to take this however I am in the mood to ramble so hello...

I woke up neither happy or sad, stressed or calm.  I just was if that makes any sense.  Unsure of what to make of this feeling (or lack thereof) I felt a walk would best clarify my clouded thoughts.  I wanted to just sort through my head and make sense of everything happening in my life.  Last week a lot of things happened that were hard for me to wrap my head around and so I needed to understand why these things were difficult for me.

Lately I have been feeling like I am in a strange middle ground between adulthood and youth and it is an interesting internal conflict that I am sure most other 20 year olds are going through as well.  An overwhelmingly large part of me is screaming: you are twenty years old, you don't need help and you should figure everything out on your own!  And I want this; I want to be able to know myself so thoroughly and completely that every bump that comes along I can work through systematically and handle in a mature manner.  However, this has been really hard for me and is proving to be more confusing than I planned on.  I have always considered myself someone who is rather in touch with my thoughts and emotions, so why am I still wanting to get my parents advice on matters? It is a strange feeling of wanting to assert my independence and do things on my own and then realizing that I am not necessarily at that point in my life.  I feel that since I have now reached my twenties, I should have life and everything figured out perfectly.  But that is not what the reality is and that is what is so scary to me.  I remember as a child thinking that twenty was so old and that twenty was the 'real grown-up age', but when I think about myself now, I don't feel like a grown-up.  Being in school is so incredibly rewarding and challenging and stimulating, but at the same time is so limiting to the outside world that it is a struggle to find the balance between independence and needing a little parental advice.

I have come to the conclusion that it is okay to not have everything figured out.  It is hard in college where every student seems to have their life plan figured out and already five steps ahead of tomorrow, but in the end it is okay to not know the answer to everything.  Chances are, all the other students are feeling the same way.  I think what is important is to keep your life in perspective and take every day one step at a time.  Whether it is school, friends, family, or everything that is proving to be challenging, the best way to find yourself is to find a perspective that makes it all fit together.  In life, there is SO much more to focus on than the next internship or what your friends think.  I feel that if I live my life in a way that continues to help me grow and figure out who I am, then I am on a good path.  The rest will come in time, because that is what happens and that is okay.

So for now, I am just going to take life as it comes because what else is there really to do?

This was quite a ramble, but hopefully it is relatable in some ways.

Health- Apple Cider Vinegar

Between hearing about this product from my friends and reading about it everywhere, I have picked up on the ever amazing apple-cider vinegar.  Yes, vinegar.  While this seems a bit random, it is actually a very beneficial and multi-purposed solution to many things.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural cleanser, it is great for cleaning and detoxing in a gentle yet effective manner.  Here are some of the ways I like to use apple cider vinegar in my everyday life.

1. Internal Cleanser.
You are in college therefore, it is bound to happen that between parties and late night study sessions, your stomach and liver will start to feel not so great; this is because your body needs to be cleansed and refilled with pure ingredients!  I like to sip on a mug of hot water with a about a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to help cleanse my system.  And it works amazingly.  It seems to be some sort of miracle ingredient because literally five minutes later I feel so refreshed and like a new person.  I like to add a dash of agave for a natural sweetener too since it can be a bit harsh at first.

2.  Hair Rinse
I recently tried this and fell in love. Apple cider vinegar is a great way to remove excess buildup from your hair.  Between styling products, heat, and just the days general buildup, apple cider vinegar can really help your hair.  The main ingredient in this vinegar is acetic acid which helps balance your hairs pH levels as well as promote hair growth, treat dandruff, and give your hair lots of bounce and shine.

To make this hair rinse all you need to do is mix 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar with a quart of water (distilled) and you are good to go!  To use it, shampoo your hair as normal, then spray the rinse in your hair...leave it in for only a few seconds and wash it out with cold water to lock in all the properties.  Don't condition your hair after because you won't need to and it could actually reverse the effects.  I would recommend doing this once a week.

3.  Face Mask
I have yet to try this because I haven't had time to get the other ingredient, but apple cider vinegar is supposed to make a great face mask.  It is said to reduce inflammation and prevent break outs-  AKA the perfect remedy for every college student.  All you need to do is mix some apple cider vinegar with calcium bentonite clay powder (which you can find at any vitamin shop or health food store) and mix it together.  Coat an even layer all over your face for about 10-15 minutes and wash off with warm water.  I read that when it is on your face you can actually feel your skin pulsating, how crazy is that?! I am definitely going to try this out.

4.  All purpose Cleaner
As if those weren't enough reasons to convince you why Apple Cider Vinegar is a magical product, it can also be used as a a natural all purpose cleaner since it is a natural disinfectant.  Just mix up 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar with 1 Cup water, put in a spray bottle and you can clean almost every surface.  This is great for cleaning your dorm room when a deep cleaning is necessary and you know you aren't filling your room with hardcore chemicals that are not good for your body.

I think my favorite part about apple cider vinegar is the multiple purposes I can get out of it.  It makes my life extremely cost efficient and I can treat my body with amazing care with only one product!  Apple Cider Vinegar is so cheap and can be found in any grocery store.

Let me know what you think!

Motivational Monday

I found this quote the other day and I thought it was perfect to start the week off on a good foot.  I know a little Bob Dylan can always pick me up!

Enjoy the Monday!

Outfit of The Day- Sunday Brunch

While most of the kids on campus roll into the dining hall on Sunday morning in last night's makeup and sweatpants, I like to dress up a bit.  I think it is fun and also putting on an actual outfit usually helps me be more productive in the day since I am not tempted to crawl back in bed.  For this lovely Sunday I channeled my girliest self and created this outfit that is perfect for fall.  I especially love this outfit because I got the best deal out of it!

My white lace dress is Urban Outfitters and I found it on clearance for $9.00.  When I saw it, I didn't know if I wanted it mostly because it is fairly short, but for $9.00 I felt like I couldn't pass it up and I am so glad I didn't.  It is fun and girly but since it is also basic, you can add anything to it to make it edgy or soft.

I paired it with this denim jacket that is technically my mom's (sshhh), some black tights from Forever 21, and suede booties.

The booties are probably my favorite part of the outfit.  They are Dolce Vita and originally over $100 but I found these adorable shoes at Marshall's for around $80 over the summer.  While they are still a bit of a splurge, you are getting such an amazing deal on them. If you ever want designer or pricier items, go to Marshall's first because they have the best deals on everything!

I added a simple gold necklace to keep the theme of simplicity but add a subtle pop.  I am not normally one for lace, but I really like the lace detailing paired with the rougher texture of the denim; it adds an unexpected dimension.

This outfit goes perfectly for a fall Sunday and I am sure I will be re-wearing this again, since it is casual and cute.
